"Thoughts & Feelings:  What's the Deal? and How to Deal"

Saturday January 21
1-4 pm, for ages 9-12  $45
Location: ID Classroom in Sebastopol, CA
call 874-8104 or e-mail to register

This will be an afternoon of exploring what goes on in our minds and bodies and how to work with, rather than resist or fight, what we experience.  We will use art, drama and journaling as a means to learn about ourselves and how to:
* name and identify the "usual culprits" (aka difficult feelings)
* shift out of negative thoughts and pictures
* help our bodies feel better
* reconnect to ourselves

There will be time for circle, creative expression, mediation and snack and usually some spontaneous happening that is fun and/or meaningful to the group.

Laughter Meditation !

Saturday February 4
1-4 pm for ages 9-12 $45
Location: ID Classroom in Sebastopol, CA
call 874-8104 or e-mail to register

Since breath connects us to ourselves and everything else, laughter is a particularly fun way of getting there!  We will do circle time, silly games, jokes and goofy art to get our breath flowing and connect to the joy inside us.

On Saturday July 30 from 11-7, Inner Discovery for Kids will be at the Petaluma Rivertown Revival http://rivertownrevival.com - Come craft and play in the awesome kid's area!

This is a fun family friendly and FREE event put together by many lively and generous Petaluma community members.  There will be bands, crazy contraptions and boat races on the Petaluma River, local vendors, art, savory foods, a much expanded KIDS AREA and more.  We will have several craft stations for kids to make clothespin dolls, bindlesticks (just like Huck Finn), cork boats, ribbon wands and anything else kids can invent with recycled fabric, string, stick, ribbon and yarn.  There will also be a station for planting seeds in your own take home container so you can watch it grow.  In addition there will be game boards set up for checkers, water trough play and other good ol' fashioned kid fun!  For moms with small children, Sono-Ma http://sono-ma.com/ will be there to provide a restful space for nursing moms or anyone else who needs a sanctuary at the fair with water, shade and snacks.  Hope to see you there!

Many kids came by to make beautiful magic wands. Wonderful to see familiar faces and new faces as well! I loved the size of this fair and the intimate and supportive feeling that was created. Everyone was very friendly and thanks to all who helped me set up and take down my booth (stage guys, Gloria, Reina (sp?), Amos, someone's dad and Share Fair volunteers!!)
Congrats to Kelly and Debbie of the Share Exchange on their first Share Fair! From what I could tell, it looked like people were having a really nice time and for me it was a great opportunity to get out and meet families in our community. Thanks Debbie for finding space for me and Jeanna for the referral!!!

Sat, 12 Mar 2011 15:36:00 -0800 Checking in http://innerdiscoverykids.com/checking-in http://innerdiscoverykids.com/checking-in

The River kids explored how to check in with themselves to see and understand how they are feeling and what might be in the way of feeling great or being in the moment.  They made their own customized check-in books where they can go down a physical and emotional checklist or, if they prefer, to spend some time drawing or writing about how they are feeling.   They talked about keeping them on their nightstands or in the car or any place where they can do a daily check in.  This is such a big step for any of us to take and they did such an amazing job at diving into this  - we joked that it's like taking out the trash except for your mind, body and spirit!  Part of the check-in is to then find out what reconnects us to good feeling/the present moment.  Awesome to see these kids pick this up so easily - stuff that takes us adults years and years!

Sat, 12 Mar 2011 15:16:00 -0800 Watching the Mind http://innerdiscoverykids.com/watching-the-mind http://innerdiscoverykids.com/watching-the-mind

The River kids have taken on a big challenge recently - they have begun learning how to watch the “monkey mind".  We did a fun exercise where everybody tracked all the thoughts that were going on in their heads for about 15 minutes.  As everyone knows who's ever tried tracking the mind, it's not an easy thing!  They began to see how many thoughts, feelings, ideas and sensations occur and how many, if not all of them, can take us out of the present moment.  They were pretty amazed at how rare it is to be in the now, in present time and not lost in a thought about the past or the future.

Students in the winter class series at River Montessori have been exploring in a deeper way how to be present.  We have been looking at all the things that create barriers to being in the moment and ways to reconnect back to the present.  In one class we talked about how to hear and listen to spirit inside - this led to an exploration of how spirit speaks to us and how we listen.  Each student explored the symbols that appear in their dreams and in their meditations that are personal for them and how they help them reconnect.  They painted and colored some symbols that are meaningful to them

What do we see - how do we see - what do we want to see - what colors the way we see things - can we see the good in tough situations? River kids explored these questions and other ideas like the way we see things often reflects how we feel inside.  Also, how we tend to see what we look for.  How can we see the bigger picture? In their art project, they explored the question:  if you could see anything out your window, what would it be?  We ended this afternoon with a meditation based upon the Native American concept of the vision quest.

Sun, 24 Oct 2010 23:17:28 -0700 Freedom lanterns http://innerdiscoverykids.com/freedom-lanterns http://innerdiscoverykids.com/freedom-lanterns
Fun project with the upper elementary kids at River during this last series.  We talked about what freedom means to each of us.  Introduced the idea that one way to be free is to understand that what other people do is usually not "about" us even if it seems like it and that if we can check in before reacting to others we can avoid creating additional pain and suffering for ourselves and others.

This day also somehow led to an impromptu singing and dance performance invented by the students.  Notions of freedom are enlivening!

Tue, 07 Sep 2010 21:07:00 -0700 Summer's End http://innerdiscoverykids.com/summer-officially-over http://innerdiscoverykids.com/summer-officially-over

We had one more camp before school started up last week.  We covered connecting to your joy and celebrating individuality, stretching the imagination and spent a lot of time with ways you can join in community and connect with a group and still be "yourself" and what that can look like. There was more nest making, boat-making and ultimately the children created a giant city, each adding their unique creative contribution.  Best of all, this mixed age group of children really supported one another, had fun and shared some quiet time every afternoon in the new classroom. They really looked forward to their meditation time and enjoyed creating the space, getting really comfy with blankets and settling in deep.  Wonderful to watch them claim the time for themselves.

Wed, 18 Aug 2010 21:31:00 -0700 Scenes from Summer Camp http://innerdiscoverykids.com/scenes-from-summer-camp http://innerdiscoverykids.com/scenes-from-summer-camp
Had a wonderful time with camp this summer.  The Inner Vision Explorer group in July really wowed me with their enthusiasm, creativity and ability to really sink into our meditation time - they relished the quiet time and made sure I never forgot to include it in our day.  Having the new classroom really helped all of us focus and was also a fun new place to play or write during journaling time.  We explored our five senses and physical structure, got into feelings and how to work with them for a couple days and ended the week with focus on connecting to spirit and each other.  They made mobiles, planted flowers, worked with clay and made sacred altars.  There were lots of games, acting out of dramatic scenes, good trampoline time and fort making near the creek during recess.  Thanks to everyone who participated!

Sun, 25 Jul 2010 14:10:00 -0700 Rivertown Fun! http://innerdiscoverykids.com/rivertown-fun-0 http://innerdiscoverykids.com/rivertown-fun-0

The Rivertown Revival yesterday in Petaluma was lots of fun! Friendly people, easy going crowd, lots of fun and creative kids.  Thanks to everyone who visited the children's area - it was great to see familiar faces and meet new families.  The boat-making was a huge hit and we had children of all ages busily experimenting and crafting boats all day long.  My apologies to those who came to fair towards the end and discovered that we had run out of boat hulls - we had over twice as many people as expected, but it was a good problem to have!  Great to watch the children get even more inventive and use other recyclables to keep on boat-making.  Everyone did such a great job: thanks to Chris Aluia who organized the whole area and so much more, Holly White-Wolfe of Sono-ma and all the tireless volunteers who helped with set-up, boat-making, duct tape dispensing:) and clean up!

Tue, 15 Jun 2010 23:20:00 -0700 Last trimester at River Montessori http://innerdiscoverykids.com/last-trimester-at-river-montessori http://innerdiscoverykids.com/last-trimester-at-river-montessori

Last Thursday, we had our final class of the trimester at River.  We closed out the year with the theme of Incredible Castles and a fun story/meditation reminding us that we are all kings and queens of our own castle and that all of our abundant treasures are within.  Earlier in the series we had lessons from dolphins about clear communication and breathing lessons where we learned to inhale, hold it for a few seconds like dolphins when they dive underwater and and then release it. We also tried to release the breath out through our "blowholes" at the crown of our heads.  During one class we explored the desert and created an oasis in our imagination during the meditation - our art project that day was making sand jars and the children were eager to discuss the "sands of time" and what it means to be in the present time.  I loved our Rainbow Body class where we used color to talk about the different energy centers of the body and played with prisms.  We had a three part class on Listening which was something kind of new for ID class.  We practiced active listening, enjoyed forest and ocean sounds, did a "jazzy jam" where everyone made a sound that worked to create a harmonious improvised song, learned to listen to our bodies and made "listening sticks" to help facilitate our ability to really hear each other. And finally, we had begun this series with planting seeds and creating wishing gardens which were all turned out beautifully.  Here are few photos and highlights from class.

Inner Discovery Camp for Kids - Summer 2010

Meditation, Art, Movement, Feelings Awareness & Journaling

What is Inner Discovery Camp?

This camp is designed to facilitate children’s ability to connect and create from an authentic place inside themselves.  In our busy lives and families there is increasingly less time for stillness and quiet space that can lead to inward reflection and deep self-discovery.  My intention is to provide a week for your child to explore his or her inner life through meditation, creative art, movement, feelings awareness, journaling and play. Through working with children, I have learned that each child has unique vision and artistry that often needs very little other than the space, time and encouragement to reveal itself.  Through solitary contemplation and group activities, each child will have ample opportunity to explore the undiscovered territory within and also have lots of fun playtime with other kids in a caring and supportive environment.

Ages 6-1No prior meditation, art or yoga skills needed! Come as you are.
